Matheran is one of the coolest hill stations which is situated in Tahsil of Karjat, Rajgad which is the district of Maharashtra. It is also known as the smallest hill station of India, which is situated on the range of Western Ghats at an height of 800m (2625 feet) above the sea level. The meaning of Matheran is “woodland overhead” or “Forest on Top”. It is located around 90 km from Mumbai and 120km from Pune. It is wonderful and beautiful place to spend your weekend. How to reach Matheran?

The name of the specified hill station is referred to as the dense growth of the jungle as it moves. It means that a location which is topped by the jungle.

  • Via Air

Nearest airport would be Mumbai which is just 100 Kms which is well connected with international and national flights. From airport, you will have to switch to either train or via road. Another Airport which is 120Km far away from Pune.

  • Via Train

Reaching to Matheran is half of the fun, as it is well connected with rail from both end that is from Pune and Mumbai up to Neral junction station (which is one of the station at the bottom of the hill). From Neral there is the small toy train which takes you through a zigzag route of around 21kms to Matheran in just 2 hours duration. Few of the marvellous valley scenes could be captured. There are three small stations named Jumma Patti, Aman lodge and Water pipe are on the way to Matheran. The toy train should be booked in advance from Pune or Mumbai which would be a preferred idea in the peak seasons.

  • Via Bus/Car

When you are planning your trip by bus/ car, then you do have three options which are mentioned below

  • Local train from CST to station of Neral
  • Toy/Mini train from station of Neral to Matheran Station.

Second Option

  • Local train from CST to station of Neral
  • Taxi – station Neral to Dasturi Naka
  • Hand pulled rickshaws/ Horse ride or via walking from Dasturi Naka to the railway station of Matheran.

Third option

  • Car- up to Dasturi naka
  • Hand pulled rickshaws/ Horse ride or via walking from Dasturi Naka to the railway station of Matheran.
