SHILLONG – Scotland of East

Shillong is one of the known romantic cities of North East and is capital of Meghalaya, which is one of the smallest states in India. It is known as the headquarters of East Khasi Hills districts and is situated with an average with an altitude of 4908 Feet (1496 m) which is above sea level, with the highest point which is known as the Shillong peak at 6449 feet (1966m).  It is 330th most popular city in India. It is 55 Km from Mawsynram (Wettest place of World). It receives less precipitation due to effect of orographic. The best months to visit Shillong is October, November and March till April. It receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon and the rainy season which usually lasts for longer than the rest of India. So ensure that you should have an umbrella, while you are travelling to this location for enjoying your holidays.

How to reach Shillong?

The legacy of the British is quite visible with the architecture and habits of foods of the populations. They are having the style of Assam houses with the slanting roofs, wooden floors (which looks like a marvellous piece of art) and larger number of windows. Lewduh is one of the largest open street markets which are situated in North –Eastern India.

  • Via Air

It is in Umroi which is about 40Km from Shillong and also known as the air force base Barapani). Although it’s a small airport with flights via Alliance Air which is operated via Indian Airlines to/from Calcutta on specific days on week. A bus is operated by MTDC which runs from Airport to Shillong.  However, the flights are available only from Calcutta and are usually cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. Guwahati airport is around 4.5 to5 hours run from Shillong which is a preferable option.

Gopinath Bordoli Airport on Guwahati which is 104 km from Shillong which is connected with rest of the India via regular flights. There are shared cabs which are available from outside airport connecting to Shillong.

  • Via Train

There are no rail lines in Meghalaya and the nearest station is Guwahati and is well connected with all the major cities of India.

  • Via Bus/Car

The government of Shillong and Meghalaya have provided good number of buses to and fro Guwahati bus station. One could get down over here and then catch a bus till Shillong. It is around 3hours drive from Guwahati till Shillong. Even for every spots there are taxis and cabs also available.

There are wide ranges of restaurants available over here in Shillong. Best of the places could be checked out in Police Bazaar area. Tibetan, Chinese and Indian are the popular foods along with Khun Ksew. The Cuisine of Tibetans and Khasi are involving roasting and boiling rather than frying it into oil and bit of species. There are branded restaurants and which are located in the police bazaar location. You could find appropriate kind of Chinese, Tibetan, and Indian food. Even dhabas are providing cheap and quality food, you could try out Momos (which is steamed Tibetan dumplings which are filled with pork and cabbage) as have been quite popular snacks. Shillong is majorly Christian so beef and pork are part of the local diet and are quite easily available in restaurants which are run by the locals.

They are having options for all kind of visitors or travellers. Majorly the hotels are located in and around Police Baazar which is quite noisy and crowded city centre of Shillong.
