Pangong Tso – The Grasslasnd Lake

Pangong also referred to as Pangong Lake, is an  endorheic  lake in the Himalayas situated at a height
of about 4,350 m.This endorheic lake is 12 kilometres long and extends from India to Tibet. During
winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water. It is not a part of Indus river basin
area and geographically a separate land locked river basin. The brackish water of the lake has very
low micro-vegetation. A unique feature of the lake is that it does not remain blue throughout the
year or even the day, rather it changes colours from azure to light blue to green and grey too .

How to reach Pangong?
Pangong Tso can be reached in a five-hour drive from  Leh , most of it on a rough and dramatic
mountain road. The road crosses the villages of Shey and Gya and traverses the Chang La, where
army sentries and a small teahouse greet visitors. The natural setting of Pangong makes for a perfect
destination for a quaint little camping adventure. The unadulterated natural beauty of the Pangong
Lake makes it a favourite destination among directors for shooting and filming. A number of
blockbusters have been shot here. Being a remote area, Ladakh is only traversable by air or road.

Via Air
If you are travelling through air, you have to reach to nearest Airport which is Srinagar International
Airport, and is approximately 44 km away. Leh Airport is well-connected to other major cities like
Delhi, Jammu, Srinagar, Chandigarh, Mumbai and several other cities in India. Taxis are available
from Madurai airport on a daily basis.

Via Train
Being a remote area the Leh city does not have any railway station of its own.  The nearest railway
station is Jammu Tawi which is 700 kms from Ladakh and it is well connected with Delhi, Kolkata,
and Mumbai. Taxis and buses are readily available from the station to reach Leh. One can travel to
Pangong via shared buses from Leh.

Via Bus/Car
If you want to travel via road, then you will have to reach Manali or Srinagar via trains and buses and
then from Manali or Srinagar, you can catch a bus or a cab or even a shared taxi that drops you
directly to Leh.  Regular bus services, regulated by Leh transport associations, are available to reach
Pangong lake. You can also take the special deluxe buses available . You can also self-drive to
destination and driving up to Pangong is worth considering because road from Manali to Leh is said
to be one of the most picturesque routes in the world.

Top places to visit in Pangong
Dukhang : Located in the area of Leh district, Dukhang is a beautiful place of tourism which was built
in the late 11th century by Kal-dan Shes-rab of Tibetan descendents. The image of Vairocana (the
Buddha resplendent) is the main attraction of Dukhang and the idol is bounded by four main Buddha
manifestations. It is a perfect destination to spend holidays and attracts a large number of tourists.
Shanti Stupa: It is a lovely attraction for tourists which is referred to a peace pillar and was founded
by a Peace Sect’ of Japanese Buddhists. It is situated above Changspa in Leh and is very popular for
its gilt panels which reveal the life stories of Buddha. It is believed that the Stupa was constructed by
Dalai Lama in the year 1983 for teaching the ideologies and preaching of Buddha.

Sun Temple: A popular religious place for Hindus, Sun Temple is another holy destination to visit in
Ladakh which is devoted to the Sun God, Bhaskar. It is believed that the temple is a medieval temple
and was built for commemorating the Sun God by King Lalitaditya.
Chang La: Chang La is a beautiful tourist destination and is the third highest motorable road in the
world. The name of this place has been derived from Saint Changla Baba and is 125 Kms from the
Pangong Lake. This place is a high mountain pass which is located in Ladakh district and is on the
route to Pangong Lake from Leh.
